Nämforsen – rock carvings by a raging river
In the village of Näsåker, right in the middle of the Ångerman River, lies one of Scandinavia’s largest collections of prehistoric rock carvings – Nämforsen. With over 2,000 figures carved into the smooth rocks, some more than 6,000 years old, this place offers a rare and powerful connection to the Stone Age.
If you continue across the bridge at the power station, there are parking lots on the other side.
You’ll see elk, humans, boats, and fish etched into the rocks just by the water’s edge. During high water, some of them disappear under the river, adding a dramatic sense of time and nature.
The site is well-maintained with wooden walkways, trails, and informative signs. There’s also a small visitor center, guided tours in summer, and peaceful riverside paths to explore.
