Hoburgs Coastal Road – One of Sweden’s most beautiful roads!

The southern tip of Gotland is a place of dramatic landscapes, barren limestone formations and windswept coastal roads. This journey takes you along the Hoburg coastline. A short but incredibly beautiful stretch of road where the sea meets ancient rock formations, nature reserves invite exploration and history is carved into stone.

This is one of Gotland’s most stunning drives where the changing colours of the Baltic Sea follow you at every turn. Stop along the way to take in the silence, interrupted only by seabirds and the occasional gust of wind. Pack good walking shoes, bring a thermos of coffee and let the road lead you south – this is a road meant for slow travel.

NOTE! Remember to only park in clearly marked parking spaces. It is not permitted to drive or park on the side of the road even if it is only sand, gravel and stones. Take care of the unique nature!

1, Turn off road I500 from the north where it is signposted “Kettelvik”

2, Husrygg Nature Reserve - A short drive inland takes you to Husrygg Nature Reserve, a protected area where Gotland’s unique landscape unfolds in full force. The highlight here is the hike up to Husrygg, a limestone ridge that offers sweeping views of the coast and surrounding countryside. The hike is not long but the climb is rewarded with one of the best panoramic views in southern Gotland. The ridge itself has been shaped by time and weather, its rocky formations standing as a reminder of the island’s ancient past.

3, Kettelviks Stone Museum - Further south, just before Hoburg, lies Kettelviks Stone Museum - a small but fascinating museum dedicated to the history of Gotland’s stone carving. The island’s limestone has shaped everything from medieval churches to simple farmhouses, and this museum tells the story of the people who have worked with stone for generations. Wander among old tools, carved millstones and the remains of quarries that once powered Gotland’s economy. It’s both an interesting and beautiful stop that provides a historical understanding of what the landscape you’ve been driving through has meant over the years.

4, Hoburg & Hoburgsgubben – The journey ends at Hoburg, the southern tip of Gotland, where the island meets the open sea. The star attraction is Hoburgsgubben, a naturally sculpted limestone that, with the right angle and imagination, resembles an old man watching over the horizon. This place is perfect for a late afternoon visit - stand at the cliff edge, feel the wind from the sea and watch the light shift across the rugged coastline. On clear days, the sunset here is breathtaking, casting long shadows across the rocky landscape.

Traveling through Gotland’s southern coast is about embracing the raw beauty of nature, its quiet history and the ever-present Baltic Sea. Each stop along the way reveals a different layer of the island's character – from towering limestone ridges to ancient stonework, from winding coastal roads to iconic rock formations. Take your time, let the wind guide you and enjoy the feeling of standing at the edge of Gotland towards the sea.
