Boat trip from Gudhjem to Helligdomsklipperne and walk back along the coast

From the charming little port town of Gudhjem on the north coast of Bornholm, small boats depart several times a day to take visitors along the dramatic coast to Helligdomsklipperne – one of the island’s most impressive natural areas. Already on the boat you get a fantastic view of steep cliffs, deep caves and the turquoise blue sea crashing against the rocks. The trip only takes around 20 minutes, but offers spectacular photo opportunities all the way.

When you disembark at Helligdomsklipperne, a world of peculiar rock formations and small coves awaits you. The name comes from the fact that the place was once considered to have healing spring water and was a pilgrimage destination. Here you will also find the Bornholm Art Museum, which is worth a visit for those who want to combine nature and culture.

For those who want to truly experience the coast, the best way home is to follow the marked coastal path back to Gudhjem. The hike is approximately 6 km and goes along a varied terrain with paths, cliffs and small beaches. Along the way you pass both open heaths and dense forest areas, with constant views of the Baltic Sea. The trip takes about two hours at a leisurely pace, but expect more stops to enjoy the view and perhaps have a coffee at one of the small cliffs.

Once back in Gudhjem, a perfect end to the day awaits – the classic Bornholm dish “Sol over Gudhjem”, with smoked herring, raw egg yolk and onion, accompanied by a well-deserved cold beer by the harbor.

The combination of a short but beautiful boat trip, a hike along Bornholm’s dramatic coast and a local food experience makes this a half-day trip that offers the best the island has to offer.
