Hammershus – The largest castle ruin in the Nordic countries

On the northwestern corner of Bornholm, dramatically placed on a cliff 74 meters above sea level, lie the ruins of Hammershus – the largest medieval castle ruin in the Nordic countries and one of Denmark’s most impressive historical sights. From here, you have a sweeping view of the sea and the barren cliff landscapes that surround the site.

A good starting point for a visit is the Hammershus Visitor Center, a modern building with exhibitions, models and films that bring the castle and life in the Middle Ages to life. There is also a café and panoramic windows with a view of the ruins.

A footbridge leads from the visitor center over the ravine to the castle itself. Once inside, you can wander freely among the walls, climb to viewpoints and imagine what everyday life was like for knights, priests and soldiers.

The castle was built in the 13th century and played a central role in the island’s political and military history. Over the centuries, it has been used as a defensive structure, residence and prison. Today, walls, towers and gates remain, giving a clear picture of how powerful the castle once was. Information signs along the path tell about the history of the site and the many power struggles that took place here.

A herd of goats graze on the slopes below the castle, helping to keep the landscape open. They bring life to the ruin and help preserve the open view of the sea and coast - while also being a charming feature for visitors.

Hammershus is more than just a ruin - it is a place where history, architecture and dramatic nature meet. A visit here is almost mandatory for anyone traveling to Bornholm, regardless of whether you are a history buff, a photographer or just want to enjoy the magnificent view.
