Østerlars rundkirke – Bornholm’s iconic medieval church

There are four unique round churches on Bornholm, and the largest and most well-known is Østerlars kyrka. It is beautifully situated in the open countryside, just a few kilometers from Rønne, and is one of the best-preserved round churches in the Nordic countries.

Built in the 12th century, the church has a fascinating architecture with thick walls, narrow windows and a round tower – all designed to be both a place of worship and a defense against invaders. Inside the church are beautiful frescoes from the Middle Ages that tell of biblical stories and saints.

A visit to Østerlars rundkirke is a must for anyone who wants to experience Bornholm’s rich cultural heritage and is fascinated by medieval architecture.
