Engelsberg – history, art and charm in Västmanland
In the heart of Västmanland lies Engelsberg, a small village with a rich cultural heritage. The most famous is the site of Engelsberg's ironworks – one of the world's best-preserved ironworks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But Engelsberg offers more than industrial history.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the beautiful station building with its period details. From here, you can stroll through the village center where well-preserved wooden houses in different colors line the quiet streets and give the village its special character.
Opposite the station building is Oljeön, Sweden's first oil refinery, located on a small island in Lake Åmänningen. The island is an exciting piece of industrial history and can be visited during guided tours in the summer.
By the river that runs through Engelsberg there is an exciting sculpture park where a beautiful walking path is lined with works of art in different styles. On my last visit, a new exhibition was under construction and most of the works were still covered – creating an extra mystique along the path.
Engelsberg is a place where history, art and nature meet in harmonious balance – perfect for a day trip or a peaceful break from everyday life.
