Fotö - a peaceful gem by the sea
The northern archipelago of Gothenburg is home to many beautiful islands, of which Fotö is one. Here, sea, cliffs and a charming coastal feel coexist on a small area – perfect for those traveling by motorhome and looking for peace, sea views and experiences close to nature.
Pitches with sea views
Fotö - a peaceful gem by the sea for motorhome travelers. The island offers several pitches and some with the opportunity to park right on the seashore. The most popular pitch is located at the small harbor where you literally park with the sea as your nearest neighbor. Here you can sit in the driver's cabin of the motorhome and watch the sun set over the West Sea – a view that could have fit on any postcard.
There are power outlets, access to water and a service house with toilet and shower nearby. The atmosphere is calm and personal – not a large campsite, but rather a welcoming place where each pitch feels like its own little nature experience. During calm evenings, all you can hear is the lapping of the waves and the cries of the seagulls.
Cliffs, hiking and sunny days
In addition to its fantastic views, Fotö offers magnificent natural experiences. The island is surrounded by smooth, sun-warmed cliffs – perfect for both hiking and lazy days in the sun. You can easily follow the paths along the coast and get to secluded bathing coves or higher viewpoints where the wind catches your hair and you get an overview of the entire archipelago.
The cliffs are child-friendly in many places and there are also small bathing areas with ladders and jetties for those who prefer a dip without salt-spattered feet on slippery rocks. And for those of you who like photography? The sunset over the sea from the cliffs on the west side is a motif you don't want to miss.
Close but secluded
Although Fotö is easy to reach by car from Gothenburg via Hisingen and Hönöleden, it feels like you've traveled much further, as you get there by, among other things, a free road ferry. There is a calmness here that is hard to find on the mainland – especially if you visit during the low season. The island is small enough to be experienced in a weekend, but also varied enough to offer several days of enjoyment.
Tips:
• Arrive early if you want a pitch furthest out to sea – they fill up quickly during weekends and summer weeks.
• Bring swimming shoes for rock swimming – it’s worth it.
• Don’t miss walking across the bridge to the neighboring island of Hönö for more eateries and shops.
Waking up to the sound of the sea, enjoying coffee with salty winds in your hair and then walking straight out onto sun-warmed cliffs – that’s everyday life on Fotö. A small island with a big presence where the camper gets the best place in the front row towards the horizon.
