Gaustatoppen – By train through the mountain

Gaustatoppen rises 1,883 meters above sea level and is one of Norway’s most iconic mountain peaks. From the top, you can see almost a sixth of the entire country on a clear day.

A journey through the mountain – Gaustabanen

For those who don’t want to or can’t hike all the way up, there’s a unique alternative: Gaustabanen. This funicular, originally built during the Cold War between 1954-1959 for military purposes, takes you through the interior of the mountain up to an altitude of 1,800 meters in just 15 minutes. The tour begins with a battery-powered tram that travels horizontally 860 meters into the mountain, followed by a cable-operated inclined railway that extends another 1,040 meters upwards.

Hiking and views

For hikers, there are several trails to the top. The most popular one starts at Stavsro and takes about three hours to walk. Many people choose to combine hiking up with a trip down via Gaustabanen, which provides both physical activity and a unique experience through the mountains.

At the top is the Gaustatoppen Turisthytte where you can buy waffles and light meals. There are no garbage cans so you take your own trash down, environmental care where we all help!

Gaustatoppen offers a unique combination of nature experience, history and technology. Whether you choose to hike, take the Gaustabanen or combine both, an unforgettable experience awaits you with expansive views and a feeling of having reached the top of the world.
