Storforsen -Powerful water and quiet peace
Norrbotten offers many natural experiences, but few places are as powerful – and at the same time as easily accessible – as Storforsen, Europe’s largest unconfined rapids. Located in the Piteälven River, just a few kilometers from Älvsbyn, this is a place where the forces of nature are at their most dramatic. Here, the water thunders forward with a force that is felt in both the ground and the chest, while the surroundings offer tranquility, forest and a feeling of total presence.
A place for all the senses!
Storforsen is not just a rapid – it is an entire nature reserve where you can hike along nice boardwalks and paths, enjoy viewpoints and picnic areas and explore the so-called dead falls – dry furrows that testify to the water’s former path. There are both easy walking trails and more hilly paths for those who want to hike further.
During the summer, the area is bustling with visitors from all over the world who come to experience the rapids, swim in the calmer parts of the river or just enjoy the glow of the midnight sun over the foaming water. In the winter, the place is transformed into a fairy tale landscape, with frozen ice formations and silence broken only by the dull roar of the rapids.
Spend the night with the rapids as your neighbor
Whether you are traveling with a camper van, looking for a cozy hotel room or prefer your own cabin in the forest – at Storforsen there are plenty of overnight accommodations.
• Hotell Storforsen is beautifully located by the rapids with views of the water from many of the rooms. There is also a restaurant, sauna and conference facilities.
• A holiday village is located next to the hotel, perfect for families or those who want a little more privacy.
• For those with a camper van, caravan or tent, there is a campsite right by the rapids. Here you can fall asleep to the sound of the rapids – nature’s own lullaby.
Tips for the visit
• Bring a coffee or lunch – there are plenty of tables and barbecue areas.
• Don't miss out on going out to the lookout points along the marked paths.
• In the summer there are often ice cream kiosks and sometimes even small markets or events.
• The camera is a must – but also remember to just stop and experience the sound, the wind and the power of the moment.
Storforsen is one of those places that stays in your memory. An encounter with wild nature, but still close and accessible. Worth a visit – regardless of the season.
