The copper mine in Riddarhyttan – a forgotten Industrial treasure in Bergslagen
Just outside Riddarhyttan, among silent slag heaps and moss-covered ruins, lies the old copper mine – a place where the presence of history is felt in every stone. Copper began to be mined here as early as the Middle Ages, and for a short but intense period in the 19th century, this was an important part of Sweden’s industrial landscape.
The old stone warehouse from 1819 still stands today, as does the site of the roasting ovens, ponds and water channels. A short path leads through the area and lets you wander between the abandoned buildings, where the silence tells of the hard work that once shaped the place.
The Copper Mine is part of the Ekomuseum Bergslagen and a fantastic excursion destination for those who want to experience another side of Swedish history – beautiful, peaceful and full of stories.
